Building Original Worlds from Borneo

Exploring how Borneo’s cultures, landscapes and imagination can inspire original fictional worlds with international reach.

01 / Manifesto

Borneo is more than a setting. It is a living world—filled with ancient rainforests, immense rivers, mist-covered mountains, the histories of old kingdoms, diverse communities and stories passed from one generation to the next.

At Keribang Studio, we believe Borneo has everything needed to inspire original fictional worlds capable of standing alongside international works.

Inspired by our own roots

Many of the fantasy worlds familiar to us draw from European, Japanese, Chinese and other major world mythologies. Yet Borneo possesses a treasure of its own.

Stories of bunian, forest guardians, river warriors, lost kingdoms, mysterious beings and the spirits of nature are more than old tales. With imagination, research and respect for their origins, they can become the foundations of something larger.

We do not intend to reproduce folklore directly. Our goal is to draw inspiration from Borneo’s cultures, histories, landscapes and communities, then shape that inspiration into original fictional worlds.

Worlds with identities, characters, conflicts, histories and rules of their own.

Borneo as a cinematic world

Imagine a world connected by great rivers. Settlements rise along the water, journeys are made by boat, and the rainforest is not merely a backdrop—it is part of life, belief and danger.

Deep inland, a forgotten kingdom may remain hidden. Beyond misty mountains lies a path to another realm. At the mouth of the sea, warriors from different territories gather before travelling towards an island absent from every map.

These ideas carry visual and emotional roots that are distinctly Bornean, yet they can grow into a universal fantasy experience.

The rainforest is not merely a backdrop—it is part of life, belief and danger.

Characters born from the land

A powerful world needs characters with a soul.

We want to create warriors, travellers and communities who do not feel like foreign characters dressed in local clothing. How they live, move, fight and understand the world must be connected to the environments that shaped them.

A river warrior may move differently from a martial artist of a coastal kingdom. An inland hunter understands the language of the forest, while an island seafarer builds a life around wind and ocean currents.

These differences are more than cosmetic. They shape personality, abilities, weapons, architecture, clothing and conflict.

From a story to an IP

An original world is not built for a single story.

It can grow through film, animation, video games, comics, novels, music, collectibles and interactive experiences. Each medium can reveal a different part of the same world.

Projects such as Amin Bunian, Ombak Racer and Battle for Nusantara are part of Keribang Studio’s exploration of that potential. Each has its own identity, but all share one purpose—to bring imagination from Borneo to a wider stage.

Local stories, global ambition

We do not want to reproduce worlds that others have already created.

We want to build worlds that could only have been born here.

Worlds shaped by rivers, rainforest, seas, history, cultural diversity and the imagination of Borneo’s people. Worlds that feel close to us, yet remain compelling for anyone to explore.

The journey is long and will require research, experimentation and refinement. But every great world begins with a small idea and the courage to believe in it.

What we believe

Borneo is not only where our stories come from. Borneo is the source of the new worlds we are building.
